Wooden Chinese Chess Board (Xiang Qi).

  • Ancient tactical game from Africa for 2 players, with instructions in Greek and English.

AGES : 16-108
  • With wooden handmade pawns and wooden case. Size 16cm. X 29cm. and height 7.5cm.
INSTRUCTIONS

EQUIPMENT :
Each player has at his disposal an army of 16 pawns, which are hierarchically divided by the different stamped ideograms. The color of one army is always red and the color of the other green, black or blue.

HOW TO PLAY :
The aim of the game is for each player to place the opposing King in such a position that he cannot avoid capture (mate), or to immobilize the opposing army (pat). The starting positions are described in the diagram. The pawn movements are made according to the lines and traditionally the opponent of the red one has the first move. (In official competitions and tournaments, the decision on who will move first is made by agreement between the players, without the color playing a role.)

MOVEMENT :
Each player's army is divided into two groups: those whose movements are restricted and those who can move freely on the board, including the palace. The pieces whose movements are restricted are the King and the Councillors, who cannot move outside the space that includes the palace on the board, and the elephants, who cannot cross the river. A large part of the board is also closed to the soldiers because of the moves you allow them to make.

HISTORY

Researchers believe that Indian chess traveled to China via the Silk Road. Traces of Chinese chess in China date back to 650 AD. In China, the chessboard depicts two Chinese kingdoms, the HAN and the CHU, which are separated by a river (Hoangho). Unlike Indian chess, the pawns are placed in the corners and there is no queen.

RELATED GAMES

One of the enlarged versions of Chinese Chess, played in China, is the game of THREE KINGDOMS. It uses a chessboard divided into three parts, joined in such a way that each player (Flag, Fire, Wind) shares a forked river, which creates two equal fronts against the two opponents. The game was intended to represent the war between the Three Kingdoms (221-264 AD).
